If you are a Standard Chartered credit card user or HSBC credit card user but you somehow stumbled upon this article instead, do consider going to my experience in cancelling them here and here respectively instead.
In this article, I am going to share with you my experience in cancelling UOB credit card that I used to have. Although I hope it is not going to be too short of an article, I do hope you still enjoy this piece nonetheless. You will know why I thought this may be a short one. 🙂
A little bit of throwback, I had been going through what I call the credit card spring-cleaning period. My aim was to review and consolidate my cards. This resulted in me cancelling two of my cards so far. The next one is UOB Absolute credit card.
I am not sure if this card is available anywhere else, but this is available in Singapore. This is how it looks like.
I am not going to talk about the benefits here, but I had decided to replace this card with something else, so I had to cancel this card.
As this is my first time going through with UOB and having been through it with other cards from other banks, the thoughts of having to go through all the dauting steps dawn on me like going through the call redirection maze, talking to customer service that can be very persistent, etc.
So, as I don’t feel like going through it at all at this point but I still want to cancel my card, I decided to look around for a bit on the different ways to cancel UOB credit cards. Here are what I found:
- You can call
- You can visit the nearest branch
- You can go through the app (!!)
Let’s go through briefly each of the method.
Call UOB Customer Service
I wouldn’t say that this step is straight forward even though it is as simple as just dialing the phone number at 1800 222 2121 (or +65 6222 2121 when calling from overseas). Be prepared to go through the maze.
Mainly, you have to be prepared to provide your personal information like your ID as well as your card detail for verification. The representative will then guide you through the cancellation process and answer any questions you may have afterwards.
My 2.8 cents here: always double confirm that your card has been cancelled and you can dispose the card. The representative should tell you how to safely dispose the card afterwards.
Sometimes, the not-so-pleasant part (to me) comes before the representative helps you to cancel the card (note that cancellation of card is very fast, especially when you don’t owe them anything). He/she will try to convince you to sign up another cards or change your mind in cancelling your card. This can take really long.
Visit a UOB Branch
Another straightforward method, but a less convenient one (in my opinion).
By meeting in person, it is sometimes easier to get straight to the point than over a phone call. However, if you do visit one, remember to bring your ID and your credit card. These should be enough as they need your ID to double confirm your identity, and your credit card to double confirm its existence.
Once you are called up, a representative will assist you with the whole cancellation process.
Through The UOB TMRW Mobile Application
This is probably my favourite and the method that I used exactly to cancel my UOB Absolute credit card. It is very straightforward, nobody to deal with, just a few clicks.
Here are the steps:
- Login to TMRW and tap “Accounts”
- Select your credit card.
- Go to “Settings” and select “cancel card”
- Select the reason for cancellation and click next
- Review and confirm
And it’s done! After a short while, you can see that your credit card display disappears from the app. That means it is successful!
However, UOB did mention that you can only cancel your card through the app if it is not the last one. So I supposed if it is your only card, you may need to call them instead. Regardless, you can always try this method first because it is fuss-free and no drama.
Pre-requisite
As much as it seems to be straightforward, just like any other banks, you need to be clear before you can cancel any cards. By clear, I mean the following:
- You don’t have any outstanding balances. If you have, they may not cancel your card or ask you to pay off all your outstanding balances first. This includes any pending transactions, interest charges, and fees.
- You may redeem your points beforehand. If your UOB credit card offers a rewards program, make sure to redeem any accumulated points before cancelling. Once your card is cancelled, any unredeemed points will be forfeited. They may or may not ask you for the favour, but it will be a waste.
- Cancel any recurring payments using the card. Well, although this might not affect you closing your card directly, it could be a hassle to deal with afterwards.
Wrap Up
Always remember to be responsible when you are using credit cards. If you can’t control yourself, don’t use a credit card, let alone credit cards. Talk to your financial advisor when you have any doubts.
Remember to monitor your statement especially when they still send you one after you have cancelled your card, and destroy the card properly. Cancelling a credit card also can impact your credit score. Consider this if you plan on applying for new credit in the near future.
